In the middle of the city lies an oasis of sorts. Nearby, animals roam their environments, birds soar overhead, fish swim, trees and flowers bloom, and the mighty Rio Grande meanders through it all. At a stone’s throw from the river, there are a number of attractions that enthrall locals and visitors alike. Since the establishment of the Rio Grande Zoo in 1927, this area has been a “must visit” destination. Along with the zoo, the nearby Albuquerque Botanic Garden, The Aquarium, Tingley Beach and the wild, wooded Rio Grande bosque are also top draws. Filling in the neighborhood are some wonderful shops and eateries, including the historic El Vado Motel, a former auto court originally opened in 1937, now a multi-use destination, with a true Route 66 vibe.

In addition to the historic El Vado Motel, the Monterey Motel is getting the same treatment by the same developers. Keeping its charm and Route 66-worthy neon sign, this hostel’s renovation will include a pool and cocktail lounge. It’s walking distance to El Vado and all parts of the BioPark: the ABQ Botanic Garden, Aquarium, Zoo, and Japanese Gardens. Soon, the nighttime events will resume with live music and the not-to-be-missed River of Lights holiday walk through the Botanical Gardens. Across Central, you’ll find Tingley Beach, a serene park with free fishing all day long. Walk or run along the trails, watch the waterfowl, or sail your model boat. This strip adjacent to the Rio Grande Bosque immerses you in the outdoors right in the heart of Albuquerque. The beautiful Paseo del Bosque Trail winds through cottonwoods along the border of the Rio Grande with views of the Sandias. Fresh air and big skies await cyclists, runners, walkers, skaters, and even equestrians.
